Video Pick - Latest Look at Mass Effect: Andromeda

It isn’t the venue normally used for marketing the release of a PC gaming title, but if you’re Electronic Arts’ BioWare with the partner of Nvidia, why wouldn’t you use the CES show?

Easily one of the most talked about and anticipated titles for 2017, BioWare presented gameplay footage from Mass Effect: Andromeda as part of GPU-maker Nvidia’s CES keynote. The two-minute sequence shows off menu screens and skill trees for the first time, as well as a brief, hectic battle.

Aimed at presenting the latest in technology, CES tends to feature cutting edge electronics including gaming computers and peripherals. But the actual games generally don’t make an appearance.

Mass Effect: Andromeda puts players in the role of the Pathfinder; an elite soldier, explorer and guide tasked with finding humanity a new home in an uncharted galaxy.

‘From arresting visuals and thrilling combat, to epic story and characters,’ BioWare writes, ‘Mass Effect: Andromeda is truly the next generation of Action/RPG gaming.’

CES seems an odd venue for a Mass Effect announcement. Though there are gaming PCs, TVs, and all manner of devices that gamers need, CES has always been a hardware show. These days, developers don’t need a venue to show off a game — just set a time on Twitter and jump on Twitch — so, if anything, the decision to reveal that kind of information in this venue feels even more like a dedicated choice.

Digital Trends asked BioWare General Manager Aaryn Flynn why they wanted to show Mass Effect: Andromeda at CES 2017.

“When Nvidia invited us here it just seemed like a great fit because they are doing so many things that are exciting to us, HDR, high-resolution stuff, the PC gaming community,” said Flynn. “Given that we’re launching March 21 in North America, it was great timing for us to come out here and start the new year right, so we took advantage of it.”

And there you have it, probably the most important piece of information isn’t why or what was shown but when the game will be available, with the all-important answer being March 21st. It can be pre-ordered now, naturally.

With such a momentous event, how could this not be our video pick of the day?
